Question 1: What is ductility?
Answer:Ductility: The ability of a solid material to deform under tensile strength is known as ductility.
Ductile material: A material that can easily be stretched into a wire when pulled is known as a ductile material. And this material does not become weaker or brittle in the process. Copper, steel, and aluminum are examples of ductile metals.
Question 2. How to find the weight of steel bar used in reinforcement?
Unit weight of the Steel Bar (in Kilograms/ meter) = (D square)/162.28 ~ (D^2)/162
Where D is the Diameter of the Steel Bar in mm
Question: Calculate the weight of 15 mm Steel Bar of Length 10 meters.
Answer: We know that the unit weight of steel can be derived from the Formula (D^2)/162.
Unit weight of 15mm Steel bar (kilograms/meter) = (D^2)/162 = (15 X 15)/162 = 1.380 kilograms/meter
Since we want to calculate the weight of a bar of length 10 meters, we multiply the unit weight with the length.
Weight of 10 meters length 15mm diameter Steel Bar = 1.38 Kilograms/ meter X 10 meter = 13.800 Kilograms.
* Always remember that the weight of Steel Bar should be approximated to 3 decimals as per IS Code.
Question3. Difference between the one-way slab and two-way slab
As the name suggests, a slab which is supported by beams on the two opposite sides to carry the load along one direction is known as the one-way slab.
In one-way slab, the ratio of the longer span to the shorter span is greater than or equal to 2.
(Longer Span/Shorter Span) ≥ 2
As the name suggests, the slab supported by beams on all the four sides and the loads are carried by the supports along both directions is known as the two-way slab.
In a two-way slab, the ratio of the longer span to the shorter span is less than 2.
(Longer Span/Shorter Span) < 2
So it is easy to remember, if the load is carried by one direction then it is the one-way slab.
If the load is carried by both (2) directions then it is a two-way slab.
Question 4: What is the crank length formula?
Answer: Formula of Crank length in the steel bar = (D1+D2+5)*10mm
Where D1 = diameter of the smaller bar.
D2= diameter of the largest bar.
The crank length in Slab is 0.42 D.
Where D is Depth of Slab- (Top cover +Bottom Cover)
Question 5. What do you mean by segregation in concrete?
Answer: As the name suggests, segregation is the separation or isolation from one thing to another. A separation of sand, cement from aggregate is known as segregation. Segregation is caused due to the high cement-water ratio in concrete. The other reason is the excessive vibration of concrete using a mechanical needle vibrator. The heavier particles settle down and the lighter particles like- sand, cement comes at the top.
Question 6: What are the Compressive Strengths of bricks?
First class brick-105kg/ cm2
Second class brick-70kg/cm2
Common building brick – 35 kg/cm2
Sun-dried brick – 15 to 25 kg/cm2
Question7. How to check the quality of cement on the site?
Following are the points on which we can check the quality of the cement on the site.
Date of Manufacturing: Strength of cement decreases with its age. So the date of manufacturing should be checked.
Colour test: The Colour of cement should be grey with light greenish shade and this color should be uniform. Cement color gives an indication of excess lime or clay.
Float test: The good cement would not float if you throw the cement in water.
When you put your hand in the cement bag you should feel cool.
Question8. What are the concrete tests?
Answer: The concrete tests are as following
Compressive strength test
Water absorption test
Water permeability test
Question9. Define seepage?
Seepage is the slow percolation of water through the soil.
Question10. What is the unit weight of the concrete?
Answer: As per IS: 456-200 Unit weight of Plane concrete is 24KN/meter^3 (24 KN per meter cube) and RCC is 25KN/meter^3 (25 KN per meter cube).
