Class of a control valve

In this lesson, we will discuss the class of a control valve. In the previous lessons, we discussed the Globe valve, its different parts, pneumatic globe valve types, characteristics of a control valve. This lesson is also important for instrumentation working professionals and college students.

Control valves are of 2 types according to classes.

Class 4 or Class 4 Globe valves

Class 6 or Class 6 Globe valves

Control valves are classified into classes according to their balancing ring used. Control valves of different classes have different types of balancing rings.

Class 4 or  Class 4 Globe valves

In class 4 control valves Teflon balancing ring is used.

Class 4 control valves are used in water lines. This type of valve is not used where the temperature is high since at high temperatures this Teflon is damaged. Class 4 control valves are used where a line temperature is low.

Class 6 or  Class 6 Globe valves

Class 6 control valves are used on steam lines. In class 6 control valve metal balancing ring is used. Graphite is mostly used. This type of control valves used where the temperature is high.
